Indonesia moves rejected Rohingya refugees to shelter

Jakarta [Indonesia], November 23: More than 200 Rohingya refugees were relocated from the beaches of a remote Indonesian island Wednesday after weeks adrift on a wooden boat, as authorities rejected locals' efforts to push the members of the persecuted Myanmar minority back to sea. The latest arrivals brought to more than 1,000 the number of desperate and exhausted Rohingya who have landed on the shores of Aceh province in the last week.

The Islamic republic has since August opened registration for candidacy in the upcoming parliamentary elections slated for March 1, 2024. Last week, officials announced that out of the 24,982 applicants, around 28 percent have been disqualified in an initial screening phase. The decision can be appealed and a final list of candidates competing for the 290-seat parliament will be announced one month ahead of the March vote.
