Italy's Meloni and NGO Sea-Watch at loggerheads after Libya visit

Jul 19, 2024

Rome [Italy], July 19: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has accused a German search-and-rescue organization of ignoring the role of human traffickers in the deaths of thousands in response to accusations she was working on a "dystopian migration policy" with Libya.
German non-governmental organization Sea-Watch on Wednesday accused Meloni's right-wing government and Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibeh of working on a policy it characterized as "dystopian" and wished them "all the worst from the bottom of our hearts." The comment was posted after Meloni visited the North African country on Wednesday along with Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
The Libyan coast is the point of departure for many irregular migrants heading for Italy.
Meloni responded by accusing Sea-Watch of saying nothing about the role of human traffickers who "got rich by killing thousands of people," adding she had travelled to Libya to attempt to halt illegal migration to Europe through the Mediterranean. (DPA)
